Rotary Club announces ice melt winners


The Rotary Club of Summit County has announced the winners of its annual ice melt competition, where people pay $5 to guess the date and time that a large orange barrel will fall through the ice into Dillon Reservoir during the spring thaw.
The barrel fell into the water at 5:09 p.m. May 11. Winners were:
Shari Goldstein of Frisco with a guess of 5:17 p.m.
Dave Fritz of Bettendorf, Iowa, with a guess of 5:42 p.m.
Dainielle Farrant of Dillon with a guess of 4:33 p.m.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward a community collaboration with Building Hope Summit County, according to a news release. ....

Rotary Club announces winners of annual short story and poetry contests


The Rotary Club of Summit County has announced the winners of is annual high school short story and poetry contests, which are designed to encourage creative literacy among students. The prizes for first, second and third places were $250, $150 and $100, respectively.

A special poetry award also was given to students in Karin Mitchell’s ninth grade class including Logan Charles, TJ Clawson, Sammy Crawford, Grace Gibson, Tarn Ihnken, Scarlet Neustaedter, Jacob Singleton and Sienna Sussman for “So much depends upon … ,” which was inspired by William Carlos Williams’ poem “The Red Wheelbarrow.” ....

I was walking with a friend on the recpath in Silverthorne when we came upon the backside of The Pad
. That’s the new concept boutique hotel/hostel. I checked out the back patio and its view of the Blue River. It won’t be long now.
The project has been years in the making and a great example of making lemonade out of lemons. If the Dillon Town Council had more creative vision, this fabulous new gathering place would have been in Dillon. That’s where Pad owner Lynne Parrish Baer first bought property.
Dillon didn’t think it was a good fit. So a new site had to be found. Now that I see this sublime spot on the river, all I can think is Lynne and Rob Baer make the best lemonade ever! ....
