Clarke County employees' health insurance to be self-funded


BERRYVILLE — Clarke County and its school division will self-fund health insurance for their employees at the start of the new year.
Employees will see no changes in coverage or rates, said County Administrator Chris Boies. Their insurance just won t be with Anthem anymore.
A recent months-long dispute between Valley Health System and Anthem prompted the switch.
Self-funded insurance means the county will be its own insurer, using its own funds. Benefit Plan Administrators Inc. (BPA) of Roanoke, a third-party administrator, will process claims on the county s behalf. Employees will access doctors through Cigna s preferred provider organization, said county Joint Administrative Services Director Brenda Bennett. ....

Clarke schools get $66,073 to upgrade security


BERRYVILLE — Clarke County Public Schools (CCPS) has received $66,073 in state grants to improve security at three of the division s schools.
The grants will be spent on improvements at Clarke County High School, D.G. Cooley Elementary School and Boyce Elementary School, Superintendent Chuck Bishop told the Clarke County School Board during its meeting this week.
A grant application submitted for Johnson-Williams Middle School wasn t approved, Bishop said. The Virginia Department of Education (DOE) didn t say why, he said.
The schools must cover 25% of the grant amounts while the state will cover the rest, Bishop said. The local share will be taken out of the schools capital account, he added. ....
