Fifty percent of India's freshwater-based coal-fired power plants fail to meet water use standards, says a CSE study | India News

NEW DELHI: Fifty percent of India’s freshwater-based coal-fired power plants, surveyed by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), do not meet the 2015 water use standards, said a new study.
The CSE, New Delhi-based environmental policy think-tank, surveyed 132 power plants, having total installed capacity of over 154 GW, and found that half of these freshwater-based plants did not comply with the specified standards. Majority of the non-complying plants belong to state-owned companies with Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra possessing the maximum number of such plants.
The study, highlighting how the water-guzzling coal-based power industry is ignoring water regulations even six years after the norms were introduced, noted that the sector is adding to water stress in the country as about 48% of the existing coal power fleet is located in water-scarce districts. ....

Covid-19: Oxygen crunch triggers interns of Kalyani hospital to protest


Interns attached to the Kalyani-based College of Medicine & JNM Hospital staged a demonstration, accusing the authorities of negligence after oxygen cylinders at the 1,000-bed healthcare facility ran out of stock, triggering panic among patients and their relatives.
The interns alleged that oxygen at the hospital ran out around 12 noon on Thursday, but the authorities did not bother to ensure its arrangement to meet the emergency requirement where 80 per cent patients had been admitted with breathing troubles.
Sources said the Domjur-based supplier of oxygen cylinders had failed to provide oxygen in the past three days because of the ongoing crisis. Nevertheless, the hospital authority did not make any temporary arrangement of oxygen, the doctors alleged. ....

Kolkata: In West Bengal, it was expected that the entry of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) into the local politics is likely to impact the result of state assembly polls, however, the party failed to open its account in the state despite fielding candidates from assembly seats of Itahar, Jalangi, Sagardighi, Bharatpur, Malatipur, Ratua and Asansol Uttar.

In Tamil Nadu too, the party failed to win even a single seat despite joining hands with the TTV Dhinakaran-led AMMK. The party had contested from Vaniyambadi, Krishnagiri and Sankarapuram assembly constituencies. HYDERABAD: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has failed to repeat its Bihar and Maharashtra magic in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM party failed to win a single seat in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the results of which were declared on Sunday.
The AIMIM had contested from seven assembly segments in West Bengal and three in Tamil Nadu. The party went alone to the hustings after its attempts to form an alliance with Indian Secular Front (ISF) failed. Owaisi fielded candidates from Itahar, Jalangi, Sagardighi, Bharatpur, Malatipur, Ratua and Asansol North where Muslim voters are in majority and none of them managed to win. ....
