Public School Board in the Red

May 19, 2021 | 5:45 AM
The Chair of Saskatoon Public Schools Board of Education says there is a flaw in how provincial funding is distributed for supports for learning, meaning they are spending $11-million more than they receive.
Colleen MacPherson explains that this funding goes toward education assistants for high needs students and special programs to help students, and there is a growing need for these kinds of supports.
Right now, the funding formula is based on enrollment numbers and some community information.
MacPherson says the Board doesn’t believe the funding is being distributed equitably because it’s not going to where the students are, so they need to have discussions with the Education Ministry about correcting that. ....

Saskatoon Public Schools facing $8-million deficit for 2021-22

Article content
Saskatoon Public Schools is turning to staff and parents for ideas as the division prepares to make “some difficult financial decisions” this spring, with division-wide reductions required in order to balance its budget.
The division is facing an $8-million deficit as it heads into the 2021-22 school year. In a letter sent to parents Thursday, SPS board chair Colleen MacPherson said that an operating increase of $4.6 million from the provincial budget was only enough to cover provincially-negotiated salary increases of two per cent for teaching staff.
