Ramaphosa touched on Covid-19 vaccine availability, moving to alert level 1 and the various changes that come with the easing of restrictions. The address comes as SA had, by Saturday night, a confirmed tally of 1,512,225 Covid-19 infections countrywide and 49,941 confirmed Covid-19 related fatalities. “The address follows meetings in recent days of the national coronavirus command council (NCCC), the president’s co-ordinating council (PCC) and cabinet,” the statement said. Ramaphosa announced that SA has vaccines available and in the coming weeks and months, rollout plans, campaigns and programmes will be extended. ....
The Table Mountain National Park and other parks across the country were closed during the lockdown period last year and with foreign tourism virtually non-existent, the parks are hoping South Africans will tour their own country to make up the gap. ....

Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy said these measures had a severe impact on businesses. “What is very clear is that there is a massive concern that businesses will reach a point of no return and will have to close down permanently.” Duminy said there had been a massive drop in bookings as a result of these measures. “Feedback from our members across the boards tells an extremely sobering story, and if we keep banning the sale of alcohol and closing public spaces that are popular tourism areas, we – as an industry – are dead in the water.” The tourism body hopes that as COVID-19 vaccines are being rolled out in many countries, people will start taking up travelling again. ....
