(Emily Russell/KCAW Photo) The Admiralty Island village of Angoon has received nearly 2 million dollars in federal funding to build a visitor center. The relief money is meant to combat economic impacts brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Local leaders hope it will boost a homegrown cultural tourism industry. Angoon doesn’t get big cruise ships, even in non-pandemic times. But they still normally see a small but steady stream of tourists in the summer. There are a handful of fishing lodges and a couple of small boats bringing visitors to the island community of around 500. ....
Angoon reports first coronavirus case in six months Posted by KCAW Staff | Apr 30, 2021 Aerial photo of Angoon in 2017 (Emily Russell/KCAW) Angoon reported its first case of the coronavirus in six months on Thursday (4-29-21). The Southeast Alaska town of around 500 people hasn’t reported a new case since last October. According to a press release from the City of Angoon, contact tracing is underway and 60 coronavirus tests are awaiting results. The city is asking anyone with symptoms to call the local clinic and get tested. So far, only one person has tested positive. Angoon’s schools moved to online learning Friday morning. The Angoon Community Association, Angoon’s Tribal government, has closed its doors to the public. The local gas station is only accepting credit and debit cards, and the store is taking email orders. The city offices remain open to the public, but masks are required. ....

(Photo provided by U.S. Coast Guard) Winter cold snaps aren’t just causing frozen pipes and power outages in the lower 48. In Angoon, recent cold temperatures exacerbated ongoing issues with the town’s water supply. The Coast Guard stepped in to help by delivering bottled water to the community of around 450 people. The troubles with Angoon’s water supply started on the morning of Feb. 3. ....
