UDO, which is 330 pages in its current form, includes 14 articles, each pertaining to certain subjects like zoning, lighting, landscaping and others.
Among the most contentious issues for city residents are proposed changes to the single-family residential (R-1) zone district, renamed Low Density Residential in the UDO, and the Traditional Residential Neighborhood zone district, called Traditional Neighborhood Residential in the UDO. Planners say the goal of the changes is to slowly increase housing stock in Holland and allow for a greater variety of housing options.
The UDO proposes changes to those neighborhoods to make it legal in LDR to convert a single-family home to a duplex, as long as the property owner lives in one of the units and the footprint of the home does not change, and to make more properties in the TNR zone district eligible to construct multi-family housing.
That was revisited Wednesday during a city council study session.
The backdrop to the discussion was the repeated petitions of a group of immigrant activists affiliated with Movimiento Cosecha who have been asking the council to sign a resolution in support of state legislation to allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver s licenses.
Council has not taken any action on the group s request, citing a section of its internal rules which states, Council will not take positions on matters or requests that do not pertain to or are not within the operational jurisdiction of the City.
Council member Lyn Raymond, who is serving her first term on the council, asked to review the rule several weeks ago after the council was approached by the activists again.
Holland mayor announces run for second term
HOLLAND Holland Mayor Nathan Bocks announced Wednesday he will seek another term in office.
Bocks, a real estate and estate planning attorney who runs his own law firm, Central Park Law, was elected Holland s mayor in November 2019, defeating two-term mayor Nancy DeBoer. I love serving the people of Holland, Bocks said. This has been an obviously unusual first elected term with COVID-19, but even with all of the limitations of COVID, we ve been able to do a whole lot of things for the community.
Bocks pointed to the city council s 8-1 passage of a non-discrimination ordinance including gender identity and sexual orientation, progress toward meeting the need for more housing options in the city and finalization of the Waterfront Holland vision as a few accomplishments in the last year and a half.
