Dense fog result in school closings and delays, visibility down to a quarter mile

By Jim Measel May 7, 2021 6:23 AM BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Dense fog which moved in during the early morning hours and reduced the visibility at the Branch County Memorial Airport to less than a quarter mile forced school districts to either delay classes on Friday or cancel them altogether. Bronson Community Schools closed for the day. Superintendent Steve Wilson said they closed because they were originally scheduled to have just a half day of classes. Union City Community Schools also closed for Friday. Superintendent Ronna Steele said in a post on the district’s Facebook page, “We have significant fog in our area this morning. We also have a large number of students that are already absent due to quarantine or illness. Considering these factors, I am going to cancel school for today, Friday, May 7th. Please take the time to rest, and we will see everyone Monday.”

BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Branch County school districts are planning no changes following Governor Whitmer request on Friday for students in the ninth through 12th to go to virtual learning over the next two weeks. Whitmer asked school districts around the state to make the move on a voluntary basis in an effort to slow the latest surge of COVID-19 cases in the state. Local officials took to social media to announce their decisions. Bronson Community Schools said they will continue to operate with in-person learning following spring break on Monday, April 12. “Our students’ and staff safety remain a priority, and should we need to move to virtual learning due to a rise in COVID-19 incidents, we will.”
