PN proposes a COVID advisory board and measures pegged to key targets

The Nationalist Party wants the government to create a scientist-led COVID advisory board and has proposed pegging public health measures to key indicators.
Speaking at a press conference earlier today, PN MPs Clyde Puli and Claudio Grech said the advisory board would be similar to the UK’s scientific advisory group for emergencies (SAGE) and would be required to publish all its minutes, for transparency.
SAGE provides the UK government with scientific and technical advice during emergencies, such as pandemics. Its membership depends on the emergency being faced but generally includes leading specialists from academia and industry.
The PN is also calling for the government to set itself explicit targets in its battle against COVID-19 and proposed pegging some public health measures to targets in key indicators, such as the rate of hospitalisation and the number of deaths. ....

Lax enforcement leading COVID-19 cases to spiral out of control

A failing contact tracing system and lax enforcement is leading COVID-19 cases to spiral out of control, the Nationalist Party said on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference, Opposition health spokesman Stephen Spiteri said that if action was not taken by the authorities soon, the healthcare system could collapse under the pressure of the coronavirus spread.
Malta registered an all-time high of new COVID-19 cases, with 336 confirmed in the last 24 hours.
Authorities also announced the death of three people, increasing the death toll to 319.
Spiteri shied away from calling for increased restrictive measures when asked by reporters, instead saying that if the current rules were followed and enforced, the situation would not have escalated this far.  ....

Clyde Puli: I know nothing of communication between Portelli and Yorgen Fenech

Former Nationalist general secretary Clyde Puli yesterday said he is unaware of any alleged illicit communication between the ex-boss of the party’s media arm and murder suspect Yorgen Fenech.
Portelli, who was appointed as executive chairman of the PN’s media wing by former opposition leader Adrian Delia in 2017, resigned from the party’s administration after a meeting with Bernard Grech on Friday.
It came after
Lovin Maltareported that Portelli had reached out to Fenech to help resolve the salary problems within the PN when he served as the party’s head of media.
That was in 2019, when Fenech had been outed as the owner of 17 Black, the company that leaked emails indicated was designed to funnel kickbacks into offshore structures set up for Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi. ....

MPs concerned about Twitter's power to cut off political leaders

MPs from both sides of the House on Wednesday voiced concern about the way how Twitter was able to ban (then) President Donald Trump’s account.
Minister Owen Bonnici and Nationalist MP Clyde Puli said that while they understood the shameful circumstances which had led Twitter to its decision, the fact that a private company had such powers, even against a sitting US president, should be a matter of concern for all those who discussed checks and balances.
The discussion came up as parliament was debating changes to electoral boundaries.
Bonnici said that separation of powers was an important element of the electoral system. Malta’s electoral system, despite its defects, was far better than that of many other countries. ....
