Expert highlights holes in Northern Ireland VAT policy
The government stance on VAT has come under fire for creating ‘potential problems’ for dealers in the UK.
Last week the government reinstated the VAT margin on cars imported from GB and sold by dealers in Northern Ireland.
Glyn Edwards, VAT director at MHA Macintyre Hudsdon said guidance on moving goods from GB to Northern Ireland has a significant hole.
” A crucial change is a new requirement to collect VAT from customers in the Republic of Ireland where delivery is routed through NI.
“The idea is that the supplier stands in place of Customs and collects import VAT from the Irish importer despite the fact that the export itself is zero-rated. HMRC have not made clear what rate of VAT should be charged or how to treat sales which would ordinarily be invoiced without VAT in the UK, such as margin scheme sales of cars. ....

A new webinar series designed to help the remarketing sector prepare for the end of the Covid-19 pandemic has been announced by the Vehicle Remarketing Association (VRA).
‘The New Normal’ webinar series will start at 10am on January 21, 2021, with a discussion on the implications of the Brexit deal including its impact on customs processes and the future of the UK motor industry.
The speakers will include Brexit expert David Bailey, professor of business economics at the University of Birmingham’s Business School, alongside Glyn Edwards, VAT director at MHA McIntyre Hudson and Andrew Thurston, customs duty consultant at MHA McIntyre Hudson. ....

The Vehicle Remarketing Association (VRA) is launching a new series of webinars to support the remarketing association with its preparations for the end of the coronavirus pandemic.
Called “The New Normal Briefing,” the first webinar in the series will start at 10am on Thursday 21 January with a discussion on the implications of the Brexit deal and how it is likely to impact on everything from customs processes through to the future of the UK motor industry.
