Greater Topeka Partnership announces equity, inclusion initiative

Ahead of Juneteenth and Pride Month celebrations in June, the Greater Topeka Partnership is encouraging local businesses to promote inclusivity and show support for historically marginalized groups.
The partnership on Wednesday announced its new Inclusive Topeka campaign, which is designed to build on prior commitments to promote diversity and inclusion and provide local businesses a way to publicly display their support for such efforts.
Last fall, the Visit Topeka board of directors voted to adopt a written statement, committing our organization to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in how we operate, said Visit Topeka president Sean Dixon. Now that we ve begun to reopen and welcome visitors back to Topeka, we re thrilled to take this as an opportunity to invite our attractions, our restaurants and our retailers to join us in our commitment. ....

Applications open for local COVID small-business grant relief program

Applications are now open for a small-business grant program being administered by GO Topeka and the community s Joint Economic Development Organization.
The two groups announced Monday that small-business owners in Shawnee County may now apply online for the JEDO Small Business Grant Relief Program, which should provide grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 to local businesses that demonstrate the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on revenue.
There are still a large number of our local small businesses that are deeply hurting because of the effects of the pandemic, said Glenda Washington, senior vice president of GO Topeka s women and minority business development program. These grants will ensure that they will be able to continue to cover rent, pay their employees and continue to add value to our community. ....

Lewis Toyota subsidizes small business relief fund with $25K donation

Topeka businesses are once again stepping up during the coronavirus pandemic, this time by creating a relief fund for local restaurants and bars in need.
During a news conference Wednesday at Lewis Toyota of Topeka, owner Brad Lewis announced the creation of a fund designed to aid area small businesses struggling because of the economic impact of COVID-19.
Lewis pledged $25,000 to the fund, and he hopes other businesses will follow suit by donating what they can.
2020 s been a crazy year for a lot of people, Lewis said. We ve weathered the storm decently, but we want to give back to the community and the local small businesses because small businesses are so crucial to a community like Topeka. ....
