The Earl of Craven has gotten himself a $4,500 facelift and he’s looking good.
For any newbies to out there, Craven County is not named for the moral laxness of its residents, but for an actual earl who co-ruled our colony in the late 1600s. He died in 1697 (in London’s theater district of all places) 15 years before our county was named in his honor.
As our county’s namesake, it is no surprise that his portraits can be found around town. In the county courthouse, for instance, we have a somewhat stiff and shiny earl, wearing armor and leaning on a table because possibly some enemy has kicked him in the shin (he did have a history of getting wounded and captured in battles), his big, fluffy hair worthy of a role in “Hairspray,” his slightly modified VanDyke calling gently to the ladies.

This year, Chairman Patti Peebles said there was an increased effort by individuals and small businesses.
