Amherst's progressive reputation on trial at stormy Board of Registrars meeting

Amherst’s progressive reputation on trial at stormy Board of Registrars meeting
Updated May 12, 2021;
AMHERST – The town’s progressive reputation ended up on trial during a stormy Board of Registrars meeting Monday, when board member Demetria Shabazz said she may resign, accusing the municipality of voter “disenfranchisement’ involving more than 100 rejected signatures on a citizens petition related to Jones Library.
Shabazz accused the town’s attorney, Gregg Corbo of KP law of using “scare tactics,” after he spoke against her suggestion that would involve examining the rejected signatures.
Corbo said her idea could lead to litigation.
The May 10 BOR meeting reviewed an open meeting law complaint filed against the board involving an April 21 meeting. ....

AMHERST An effort to declare null and void the recent certification of signatures on a voter veto effort to put the $36.3 million Jones Library project to a town referendum has been rejected by the Board of Registrars.

Woods Pond residents overstaying season to get Cease & Desist notices

The Select Board approved Cease & Desist notices to be sent to the occupants residing in the seasonal homes of Woods Pond campgrounds, located on King’s Way, at the Jan. 25 Select Board meeting.
The board emphasized that it is not safe for residents living past season due to the lack of potable water, and they must leave the premises.
It was previously reported that several occupants residing at these seasonal homes have been living there illegally year-round. Many of these cottage-style units in this part of Woods Pond are restricted to seasonal use from April 16 – October 10.
Most of the campgrounds consist of shared communal wells and septic systems, both of which aren’t designed and sustainable for year-round use.  ....

Stoughton: Dangerous pit bulls spared, but illegal kennel found

STOUGHTON A pair of a special breed of pit bulls in Stoughton that attacked another dog on their property so viciously in October that it had to be put down was determined not to be a danger to residents  by a unanimous decision   at a Tuesday Stoughton Select Board meeting.
However, that ruling was going to be contingent on them being housed in their kennel while on the premises. Select board member Bob O’Regan discovered that, when the structure had been built last year, the contractor never filed permits, making it illegal. This was after the determination was made that the canines would not be a threat after their owner made modifications to the fence and kennel to keep them secured within the property. ....
