Chances are that when you went to High School, you rarely saw a police officer. Maybe you saw an officer on career day. That’s changed completely in the last two decades, and now almost every school in Calhoun County has some sort of regular police presence.
Battle Creek City Commissioners will be asked to renew an agreement with Lakeview High School this Tuesday night, which provides for a dedicated BCPD “Liaison Officer.”

Battle Creek Police Chief Jim Blocker said the department has agreements for officers with dedicated office space in both Lakeview and Battle Creek Central High Schools. “Corporal Damon Young is the officer at Battle Creek Central, and Corporal Stephen Herbstreith is the Lakeview officer,” said Chief Blocker. ....

Detroit Police Chief James Craig announced Monday that he s voluntarily stepping down from the position and may run for Michigan Governor against Gretchen Whitmer. This June marks 44 years in law enforcement for Craig, who started and now ends his police career in Detroit.
Battle Creek Police Chief Jim Blocker is a big fan of Craig’s. “I think he s a pretty extraordinary man,” said Chief Blocker. “I have spent some time with him in his office, probably over the last five or six years talking a lot about their state-of-the-art real-time crime center that they have, as well as the Green Light Detroit program. Battle Creek remembers violent crime victims at vigil

With words, prayers and flowers, victims of violent crimes were remembered in Battle Creek on Thursday.
About 75 people gathered downtown at Friendship Park on the edge of the Battle Creek River for the Crime Victims Rights Week Candlelight Vigil.
Battle Creek Police Chief Jim Blocker said victims must cope with physical and emotion trauma well beyond the actual crimes.
We are here to advocate for the people who suffer, he said. They have to relive it over and over.
He said the memories of violent crime can be triggered years later.
This is just a small way to support your healing, he said about the gathering. ....
