Born in Greencastle, north Belfast in 1941, he went to St Malachy’s College on the Antrim Road. When he left school he went to work in an accountant’s firm in May Street before branching out on his own when he was about 25. The 1960s were turbulent years with an increasing focus on the discriminatory nature of the northern state. 1966 also witnessed the popular upsurge in republicanism arising from the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. Liam had a great grá for the United Irish Society. He read any books written about the period and later, when he worked for Sinn Féin in the assembly, he brought with him paintings of United Irish leaders he admired to put on his wall. ....
Covid-19: Police warn against Rangers crowds in Belfast s Shankill area Published Police have warned against crowds gathering in the Shankill Road area of Belfast. Images on social media show large numbers of Rangers fans celebrating the team lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy on Saturday. Investigations will follow and, where appropriate, enforcement action may be taken in the coming days, added police. Police Scotland also urged crowds of Rangers fans to disperse after they gathered in Glasgow during the team s 4-0 win against Aberdeen. Translink said its services in the Shankill area will be diverted, operating via Agnes Street, Crumlin Road and Tennent Street. ....
Investigative Failures By Police Found Over Four Deaths Significant operational and investigative failures by the police over the deaths of four people during severe disorder in Belfast in August 1969 have been found, according to the Police Ombudsman. In a 128-page report published , Marie Anderson concluded that nine-year-old Patrick Rooney, Hugh McCabe aged 20, Samuel McLarnon aged 27, and 28-year-old Michael Lynch, died after being struck by police gunfire during disturbances in the Divis and Ardoyne areas of the city. The report found that even allowing for the tumultuous circumstances of the time, the RUC failed to effectively investigate any of the deaths. ....
BBC News By Aileen Moynagh A man facing 63 gun charges after shots were fired in north Belfast had done the Good Samaritan and gone wrong , a court has heard. Mark Daniel Waller, 32, of Crumlin Road, Belfast, faces charges including having a gun and ammunition in suspicious circumstances. The court heard that in follow-up searches, which included Mr Waller s home, 27 suspected firearms were found. These included four shotguns, a number of pistols and ammunition. The 63 charges relate to a shooting incident at Silverstream Road and Manor Street on Sunday, 2 May. Belfast Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday that police received a report that a man had smashed a window at a house in Manor Street. ....
