COLUMBIA - After more than a decade of planning, work is set to begin on the long-awaited extension of Discovery Parkway that will create a new major thoroughfare in southeast Columbia. Construction is set to begin this spring and will connect Gans Road to the intersection of New Haven and Rolling Hills roads. The parkway now stretches less than a mile from Highway 63 to Gans Road. The extension will go north of the highway and past MUâs South Farm Research Center. The connector âbasically completes a link thatâs missing between two major freeway interchanges,ââ Community Development Director Tim Teddy said. âFor our residents in Old Hawthorne, The Vineyards, The Brooks, which are some of the larger Columbia neighborhoods in that Rolling Hills Road area, itâll make it a fairly direct route for them to get to Jefferson city via Rolling Hills and Discovery Parkway.â ....

Gans Creek rezoning COLUMBIA - The proposal to build a residential development area near Rock Bridge State Park was at the forefront of Monday nightâs Columbia City Council meeting. The proposed zoning was for a section of property located on the south side of Gans Road and the east side of Bearfield Road. â¨The plan calls for using the area as an affordable housing complex. Last month, the Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission rejected the rezoning proposal for the area. There was strong support for both sides of the rezoning debate, as a number of citizens voiced their opinions during the public comment portion of the discussion. ....
COLUMBIA - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is trying something new to limit the presence Callery pear trees in local environments. Callery pear trees, also known as Bradford pears, are the top invasive plant species in Missouri. They are easily identifiable right now because of the white petals of their blossoms. MDC community forester Ann Koenig said the trees take up space in many places. Dozens of invasive pear trees invade this acreage on the southeast corner of West Nifong and Sinclair in south Columbia. You will see parks here in Columbia and in open fields that are just absolutely inundated with pear right now, Koenig said. They re easy to identify right now because they re blooming. ....
