NEW YORK (1010 WINS) The NYPD’s chief of transit is calling for a ban on prolific repeat offenders in the subway system amid a spate of crimes in the transit system.
Several repeat offenders have committed crimes in the system in recent weeks, including a suspect who was arrested for snatching a phone at a station in Queens last month, NYPD Chief of Transit Kathleen O’Reilly told 1010 WINS.

That suspect was arrested eight times for the same crime last year, O Reilly said. ....

The MTA worries that the threat of harassment, the presence of mentally ill and homeless people, and the perception that the subway is dangerous is keeping customers from returning to the system in greater numbers as the city’s COVID-19 outbreak continues to gradually diminish. The NYPD, however, believes the subways have never been safer.
They’re both right, depending on how you look at it.
Major felony crimes in the subway are down 53% this year compared to last year, according to the NYPD. There were however nine more felony assaults, for a total of 119 so far this year, compared to 110 during the same time period last year, the NYPD says. And the perception of riders, that crime remains a persistent problem, is not captured in police cri ....
