Credit Ralston Smith for Unsplash As of this month, 83% of Michigan’s school districts say they’re already offering or planning to offer at least some form of in-person instruction, according to a new statewide survey. That’s a big jump from the 64% who were planning to do so in January, according to a release from Michigan State University. But while only 15% of districts say they’re still fully remote, researchers say those districts are disproportionately urban, have a high proportion of Black and low income students, and had lower average scores on the most recent Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-STEP. They also have some of the highest rates of chronic absenteeism and the lowest high school graduation rates, says Katharine Strunk, an MSU professor and director of the Education Policy Innovation Collaborative. ....
Michigan schools shifting to provide in-person instruction Michigan school districts are shifting away from remote instruction toward offering some in-person instruction, with less than half as many districts providing remote-only instruction in February compared to January, says a new report. February also saw the largest increase (from 64% to 83%) in districts planning to offer some form of in-person instruction since the start of the 2020-21 academic year.
Governor Whitmer, who issued a goal that all schools offer in-person instruction as soon as possible and no later than March 1, 2021 is closely monitoring districts’ plans to ensure the safe opening of school buildings as soon as possible. ....

Districts in Lawrence, Topeka, Olathe and elsewhere rotate students between in-person and online lessons. Kids get physical time in front of a teacher without risking crowded classrooms during the pandemic. But teachers say that the constant shift from the classroom to the screen disrupts learning; that they have twice the workload; and that they have to split their focus between online and in-person students, giving neither the attention they deserve. ....
