MARLING Sixth Form has said goodbye and good luck to its first ever co-educational year group. Yesterday (Monday), Marling sixth form held a formal garden party to celebrate the graduation of its first co-ed year. Students joining the school s sixth form made history in September 2019 as they were the first co-educational cohort - boys and girls educated together - since Marling opened in 1887. Caitlin Griffiths, who joined Marling from Severn Vale School, said: I was so excited to be one of Marling’s first girls and then to be appointed as one of four girls in the student leadership team. ....
Owen Gower has heard all that before. ‘And whilst being at the heart of what he did, that denigrates his work to some extent. Because he was a lot more than a chancer who happened to stumble across an interesting idea.’ When Owen arrived in Berkeley seven years ago, he was well-qualified to head up this delightful, fascinating museum with its 5,000 artefacts – from sharp lancets believed to have been owned by Jenner himself, to family books and some of the doctor’s self-published studies. On hearing the announcement on Friday, KLB head teacher Tim Rand said: “This investment in our school is much welcomed and will support the school’s aim of providing a modern state of the art learning environment for our students. It will deliver a level of investment and change that could never have been realised through our normal funding streams, and will deliver accommodation appropriate for the next 50 years and beyond. ....
Olympic dream becomes a nightmare THE Olympic dream ended in tatters this week for Simon Mason and Mark Pearn as the Great Britain men s hockey team saw their hopes of winning a medal evaporate. Mason, who hails from Berkeley, and Pearn, originally from Charfield, have both endured a miserable week as three defeats in five days condemned Britain to their worst finish at an Olympic tournament for 36 years. After last week s 3-1 win over Egypt and narrow 3-2 loss to Korea, optimism was high among Jason Lee s squad, although three heavy defeats have since quashed all hope of progress within the competition. ....
