Vermont free tuition program sees ‘astounding’ demand

Megan Cram is working full-time at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin and enrolling at Vermont Technical College this fall in the hopes of getting her license as a registered nurse. But when she learned recently that she was pregnant her due date is days before finals Cram reconsidered.
“Financially, I didn’t know how I would pay for it,” she said.
A scholarship covering the full cost of tuition for a year which, funded by federal COVID-19-relief aid, is only temporarily available for now steeled her resolve and made her decide to stick to the plan.

When the Vermont State Colleges System announced it was providing free tuition for students pursuing training in nursing and other âcritical occupationsâ at Castleton University, Northern Vermont University and Vermont Technical College, it did so with the hope there would be strong demand for the roughly $5 million in federal funds set aside for the program.
Half a month into fiscal 2022, most of that money has been spoken for, due to demand more than doubling supply for free classes at those three schools. The system has put new awards at those campuses on pause and started a waiting list as it works to identify additional funding sources for the project.

FORT WORTH – Senior Anastasia Webb captured the individual all-around national championship and the Oklahoma women s gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA Finals with a 198.0875 in semifinal action.
The Sooners finished in first place in the second semifinal of the day to make their eighth straight and 10th overall appearance in the team finals. The Sooners posted the top score of both rotations inside Dickies Arena. I really felt like their minds were in the right place, head coach K.J. Kindler said. This was probably our best two weeks of preparation the whole year. We had a lot of things to cover in terms of filling the holes of Karrie Thomas since regionals so there was a lot of work to be done. When we walked on the floor today, I felt a very good vibe from them. Making it to the final night is one of the toughest things to do and I m very proud of them.

Come Friday, April 16, Utah’s gymnastics team will take to the floor inside Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, as one of the eight teams that qualified to compete for the 2021 national championship.
The Red Rocks will be where they belong. Utah has qualified for 45 consecutive national championships, including 39 berths at the NCAA championships, a run of excellence that no other program in the country can come close to equaling.
