With four published collections and appearances in numerous outlets, Katie Ford’s poetry has found a wide audience. But over the last decade, the professor of creative writing at UC Riverside has embarked on a series of collaborations that have allowed audiences a unique way to experience her work through music. 
The first, with composer David Serkin Ludwig in 2011, came about after a mutual friend suggested Ludwig set text from Ford’s poetry to one of his compositions. A new experience for Ford at the time, the two would go on to collaborate on three projects involving Ford’s poetry and Ludwig’s music over the next several years. Shriver Hall Concert Series will present acclaimed violinist Jennifer Koh in a world premiere virtual recital on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at 5:30pm ET. Koh juxtaposes two of Bach s landmark works for solo violin - Bach s Partita No. 3 E Major, BWV 1006 and Sonata No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1005 - with 12 micro-works that she commissioned in 2020 as part of her Alone Together project, a response to the pandemic and the financial hardship it has placed on many in the arts community. EnsembleNEWSRQ served as our guide once again in the adventures with new music in Monday’s program “Solitude and Suffrage,” performed live online from the First Congregational Church and available for an extended period on the group’s website ensrq.org.
While I miss the live performance and communal experience of concerts, there are some surprise benefits to video performances, chief among them the opportunity to listen a second time to catch what you might have missed.
