Graham residents protest hiring of police offer previously fired in Greensboro
Several people gathered at Graham s Centennial Park on Saturday to protest the Graham Police Department s recent controversial hire of officer Douglas Strader.
Strader was fired in September from the Greensboro Police Department after he was identified as one of several officers who fired shots at a car fleeing a crime scene. Greensboro officials let Strader go for what they described as unnecessary use of deadly force.
Protestors at Saturday s rally also emphasized another incident in 2018 in which Strader was one of several officers associated with the hog-tying of a suspect who later died. ....

In late 1985, Norman Fowler, who was then the health secretary in Margaret Thatcher’s government, sent a letter to the prime minister. He said that there had been 275 people with Aids in the UK that year. Of these, 144 had died. Without action, he added, a further 20,000 people would be infected with HIV by 1988. The UK was on the precipice of a public health emergency. Fowler encountered a lot of scepticism.
“People at the time said that I was entirely taken over by the subject, and that I overexaggerated,” says Lord Fowler, now 83 and speaking via Zoom from his home in Fulham, south-west London. Today, February 14, 2021, will mark the three year anniversary of the at the high school in Parkside, Florida. On that day 17 people were killed and 17 people were injured. The lives of these students, teachers and staff and families were changed forever. Additionally, the lives of the first responders, paramedics and police, were also changed forever. A family never fully recovers from the death of a child. Furthermore, these statistics do not account for how many students at the school, teachers and family members are suffering from grief and Post Traumatic Disorder. Remember, this is Valentines Day and students and families were expecting a day of fun not a day of horror that has changed them for life. ....
