India and Nepal Hold Joint Meeting Amid Improvement in Ties

The sixth edition of the India-Nepal Joint Commission was held in in-person in New Delhi on January 15, with the Indian side being led by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the Nepalese delegation headed by Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali. The meeting marks a significant improvement in relations between the two countries which, last year, inched towards the rock bottom following territorial claims and counterclaims by both sides.
It also takes place amid considerable political turmoil in Kathmandu as infighting within the ruling Nepal Communist Party led Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government to recommend the dissolution of Nepal. The Himalayan country is scheduled to hold fresh elections in April and May this year. ....

Nepal Communist Party leader and former PM Prachanda has accused PM KP Sharma Oli of splitting the ruling party and dissolving Parliament at India s direction
Ahead of the Nepal Foreign Minister s visit to India, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda , the Chairman of the Nepal Communist Party s splinter faction, on Wednesday accused PM KP Sharma Oli of splitting the ruling party and dissolving Parliament at New Delhi s direction.
Addressing leaders and cadres of his faction at the Nepal Academy Hall in Kathmandu, Prachanda, the former PM, said that Oli had in the recent past accused that some leaders of NCP were hatching a conspiracy to topple his government at the behest of India. The claim comes as a surprise given that Oli has been making anti-India moves and statements in recent months. ....

Nepal Foreign Minister embarks on three-day India visit

The Joint Commission is the highest mechanism between the two countries to discuss the entire gamut of bilateral relations.
During the meeting, the two countries are scheduled to hold discussions on various issues including bilateral trade, energy, border disputes and COVID-19 assistance.
The Joint Commission meeting “will discuss the whole gamut of Nepal-India bilateral relations, including trade, transit, energy, boundary, COVID-19 cooperation, infrastructure, connectivity, investment, agriculture, tourism, culture, among others,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement earlier.
During his visit, he will also meet with the high-level dignitaries of India, the foreign ministry said here.
Mr. Gyawali is being accompanied by Foreign Secretary Bharat Raj Poudyal and Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population Laxmi Aryal, according to officials. ....
