Man shot by Costa Mesa police in third officer-involved shooting since Jan. 31

An attempt by Costa Mesa Police Department officers to thwart a commercial robbery involving a suspect armed with a knife early Thursday resulted in an officer-involved shooting the third such incident to be reported by the department in 40 days.
A male suspect was reportedly receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed location Thursday, according to a release issued by the department hours after the incident occurred.
Police say the man, whose identity is not being released at this time, entered a business on the 2200 block of Fairview Road sometime before 4:45 a.m. and was allegedly assaulting a cashier with a knife when officers arrived on scene. ....

Former Costa Mesa Police Chief Rob Sharpnack endorses John Moorlach for Supervisor

The Moorlach for Supervisor campaign announced the endorsement of former Costa Mesa Police Chief Rob Sharpnack today. Sharpnack retired in 2019 after serving a 26 year career with the Costa Mesa Police Department.
“Now more than ever Costa Mesa needs leadership that is honest and supports officers against the defund the police movement. That is why I support John Moorlach for Orange County Supervisor.” Said Sharpnack.
After a long career in law enforcement protecting the public, Sharpnack is again protecting citizens by urging voters to elect John Moorlach. Understanding the complexity of county government, Moorlach knows what it takes to fully fund law enforcement with resources they need to protect the public while balancing budgets without raising taxes. Police fatally shot a motorist about 10:30 a.m. Friday in the 1500 block of South Coast Drive.

A motorist died Friday after being shot by Costa Mesa police when he allegedly backed his vehicle into one of his passengers.
The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Coast Drive, said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Bryan Wadkins. As officers patrolled the area, they made contact with three people in a parked vehicle. They removed two passengers and detained them.
As the officers attempted to contact the driver, he allegedly reversed the vehicle and struck one of the passengers. ....
