Trust raising money for 23-acre land purchase
ORLEANS The Orleans Conservation Trust last week announced its goal of raising $900,000 for the purchase and habitat restoration of 3.74 acres of land at 4 Braddock’s Way.
The property will complete the creation of the 23-acre Henson’s Cove Conservation Area, the trust said in a statement March 5.
The trust said it intends to preserve the land in perpetuity and restore much of the waterfront to grassland habitat.
The conservation area already offers prime habitat for a variety of wildlife, including northern diamondback terrapins, Eastern box turtles and American black ducks.
Restoration work has helped the threatened diamondback terrapin. The number of protected nests increased and the number of surviving hatchlings rose from 13 in 2012 to 162 in 2020.
