Last chance to order your summer hanging basket ); ); A TOTAL of 173 summer hanging baskets have now been bought by residents and businesses in Henley. They will be hung at houses, shops and offices around the town as part of Henley in Bloom’s annual campaign, supported by the Henley Standard, which was launched nearly a month ago. Windowflowers, of Burnham, supplies the baskets and is now planting them up ready for installation in late May and early June. The company will also maintain them all summer. This year’s plants will include pink and purple fuchsias, verbenas, pelargoniums, surfinias, petunias and calocephalus in a colour scheme to celebrate life returning to normal after the coronavirus pandemic. ....
Deli owner wins photoshoot in competition ); ); A DELICATESSEN owner in Henley has won a professional photoshoot of her shop in a competition. Zoë Ferreira, who runs The Henley Larder in Bell Street, had to submit a photograph showing a display of fresh, bottled and local products which had previously won Great Taste Awards. These are national awards run by the Guild of Fine Food, which grants one, two or three stars to various products based on their quality. Mrs Ferreira, 38, of Greys Road, Henley, decided to take part in the competition after being told about it by 2020 award winner Johnpaul Maillard, or Johnny HoT Stuff. She said: “I have a beautiful mural of Henley so I set up the display with that as the backdrop with as many Great Taste products in the shop as possible. I don’t pick products because they have won an award but it’s good for customers to see a mark of excellence. ....
Forty businesses still open in third lockdown ); ); They include dentists, opticians, estate agents, newsagents, banks, sports shops and stationers. Many are only allowing customers to visit by appointment. But customers can walk into many others, including newsagents New News, Regatta Wines and convenience store Henley Mini Market in Reading Road and Station News in Station Road. Health and beauty retailers Boots and the Henley Pharmacy in Bell Street as well as Superdrug in Falaise Square and Bodywise Health Foods in Upper Market Place are also serving customers. Foods and drink retailers Waitrose, Sainsbury’s Local, butcher Gabriel Machins, Patisserie Franco Belge and the Mr Simms sweet shop are also open. Writer’s auction to pay for film ); ); A SCREENWRITER from Henley is holding an online silent auction to put her new short tragi-comedy film into production. Amy Brandis, 26, of Western Road, wrote Screw the Pooch, a film about loss, during the second coronavirus lockdown and it will cost £1,750 to produce. Many Henley businesses have provided lots for the auction. Laurence Menswear in Duke Street donated a pocket square and tie worth £90 and David Rodger Sharp Jewellers in Duke Street donated a sterling silver bracelet with cubic zerconia worth £195. Other businesses that have donated items include Gabriel Machin in Market Place, the Henley Larder in Bell Street and the Vintage Look in Hart Street. ....
Business window display competition has fitting winner ); writes Gee Harland. Timber Windows in Hart Street was one of more than 25 businesses judged for this year’s contest, which had the theme of “Christmas in Henley”. The business has only been open for a year so this was the first time that it had taken part. The winning display featured a golden nutcracker figurine on a boat full of gifts and was designed by the shop’s marketing team. “They did a fantastic job it’s very Christmassy,” said Lynette Tweedy, a showroom assistant at the store. “I wanted the boat and the river because we’re right next to the River Thames.” The Helen & Douglas House charity shop in Duke Street, which won the competition last year, was runner-up with its winter wonderland display. ....
