Athens Academy grad part of 1,000-mile hike fundraising for military families

Many college students regard their Winter Break as a time to relax, recreate and recharge over the Christmas holidays. 
But Watkinsville resident Colton Kennedy isn’t like most college students. The Texas A&M sophomore – a member of Company H-1 in the school’s Corps of Cadets – is back home now, but prior to his return to Georgia he joined five other cadets in his unit to march a combined 1,000 miles to raise funds and awareness to a deserving foundation. 
Kennedy, who graduated from Athens Academy in 2019, spent eight days in early December with his cadet colleagues as part of the Project Atlas Ruck March, now in its fourth year. The ruck march refers to the rucksack the cadets wear on their backs that holds extra clothing, food and water, and all four of the marches have collected money and raised awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF).  ....

Three detained in active shooting at Walmart


SEVIERVILLE — Three individuals were detained Wednesday afternoon after reports of an active shooter in the Walmart at 1414 Parkway.
“As far as we know there were no victims whatsoever,” said Bob Stahlke, Sevierville Police spokesperson.
The preliminary investigation indicates that this was likely a dispute between store customers wherein multiple guns were displayed.
None of the three people detained had been charged at press time. Police have determined that no shots were fired and no one was injured during this incident.At least one suspect had a gun when he was detained.
A Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopter was flying over the scene looking for possible victims following the incident. Multiple agencies were on the scene, and parts of the Parkway were closed for more than an hour while officers kept a perimeter around the Walmart. ....

Corps of Cadets members march 1,000 miles, raise $25,000 for military families


Six Texas A&M University students completed a cumulative 1,000 mile fundraising ruck march Wednesday afternoon. 
The journey that took the men from Zion National Park in south central Utah to Pagosa Springs, Colorado, was to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. It was the fourth year that members of the A&M Corps of Cadets Company H-1 joined to be part of “Project Atlas.” 
The journey is known as a ruck march because the team members wore rucksacks, which the team’s itinerary says were usually filled with extra layers of clothing, food and water. 
The group’s original goal was to raise $16,000 for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides financial assistance for scholarships and educational counseling to the surviving children of Special Operations personnel who died in the line of duty. ....

Texas A&M Cadets to march 1,000 miles to Pagosa Springs for Special Operations Warrior Foundation

Six members of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets are participating in their fourth annual Project Atlas Ruck March in support of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. 
The cadets will conduct a “ruck march” a cumulative distance of 1,000 miles from Zion National Park in Utah to Pagosa Springs over the course of eight days during the holidays. 
The term “ruck march” is in reference to the rucksack carried on the backs of the cadets that holds their extra layers of clothing, food and water. 
This ruck march will raise awareness and funds for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships and educational counseling for the surviving children of Special Operations personnel killed in the line of duty.  ....
