THIBODAUX Archie Manning had no idea what the football camp which bears his family’s famous name would evolve into a quarter of a century later. “I didn’t think it would be anything more than a regional thing,” Archie recalled during Friday’s Media Day for the Manning Passing Academy. “At the time, I didn’t know that Peyton would play 18 years in pro football and Eli would play 16 years in pro football. That certainly adds recognition and credibility to the camp. I mean two years ago we had 18 kids here from Canada. We had no idea.” The camp which began in 1996 with less than 200 campers has grown into one of the premier quarterback camps in the country. This year the camp celebrates its 25th anniversary and has more than 1,200 campers from more than 40 states and from Canada and Mexico. ....

In the 1966 Bishop McCort Yearbook, there is a photo of Jack Ham in his uniform. In the photo, he is wearing jersey No. 66. After high school, Ham attended prep school at Massanutten in Woodstock, Va., where he played football but didn t play a lot or very well, either. Ham left Massanutten with no scholarship offers, but he did have a teammate named Steve Smear, a defensive lineman who had gotten a football scholarship to Penn State. When one of the Penn State recruits backed out of his commitment and signed with Iowa, there was an open spot, and Smear lobbied the coaches to give that scholarship to Ham. The Penn State coaching staff ended up reaching out to Ham with an offer late in the spring before his freshman year in college. ....
Southeastern Louisiana quarterback Cole Kelley won the Walter Payton Award on Saturday as the best offensive player in the NCAA s Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The former Teurlings Catholic standout is the 34th player to win the Payton Award, which is named for the Pro Football Hall of Fame running back who played college football at Jackson State. Before 1995, the Payton Award was given out to the most outstanding player in FCS. However, it was changed to recognize the best offensive player after the Buck Buchanan Award was created for the nation s best defensive player. Past winners of the Payton Award include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, and Jimmy Garoppolo. ....
HAMMOND, La. – The nation s best offensive player resides in Hammond, America, as Southeastern Louisiana senior quarterback Cole Kelley was named the 2020-21 Stats Perform FCS Walter Payton Award winner in an announcement from Stats Perform on Saturday. Kelley becomes the 34th recipient of the Payton Award, bestowed upon the best offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision and named for the legendary Chicago Bears running back, who played collegiately at Jackson State. Kelley is the third Payton Award recipient from the Southland Conference, joining Stephen F. Austin s Jeremy Moses in 2010 and Sam Houston s Jeremiah Briscoe in 2016 and 17. Other notable past recipients of the Heisman of the FCS include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, Jimmy Garoppolo, Cooper Kupp and Trey Lance.
