Austin's Black community shrinking; community leaders push for change

Danielle Austin moved to Austin for work in 1997, shortly after graduating from college. Two years later she met Ron Austin, who had moved from Miami, and they later married. They bought a home in North Austin in 2004, but as their family grew and their needs changed, the Austins moved to Pflugerville with their two children, where they have lived for about six years.
“We needed more space and wanted to make sure we found a school district with good education programs and where athletics and extracurricular activities were active and built up,” Ron Austin said.
More Austin families have started to move to neighboring Central Texas cities over the past decade, and local leaders attribute that to a combination of factors, including the rising cost of living in Austin, the tightening housing market, the desire for more space, and the importance of good schools and welcoming communities. ....

Currently, only 2 percent of all US teachers are Black men, something the program at Huston-Tillotson seeks to change. When Black students are taught by a Black teacher, they are significantly more likely to graduate high school and consider attending college.
Huston-Tillotson President Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette has witnessed the power of that relationship firsthand. Her son had a Black male teacher in the fifth grade, and it transformed his education.
“It just really did something magical for him,” says Dr. Burnette. “So this is personal for me because of my own experience raising an African American male. It’s my mission to be able to get these young Black men in classrooms, so they can pour into other vessels like themselves because they have shared experiences. And there’s nothing like being taught by someone who has a shared experience.” ....

Apple has profiled the inaugural class of Huston-Tillotson University s African American Male Teacher Initiative, a program created in partnership with the iPhone maker to get more Black male educators in classrooms.
The program has Apple providing scholarships to students, as well as hardware, software, and professional development courses for students and faculty. It was established via Apple s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative, as part of a multi-year partnership with Huston-Tillotson.
The program was developed to change the statistic that only 2% of all US teachers are Black men. According to Apple s profile, Black students are significantly more likely to graduate high school and consider attending college when they are taught by a black teacher. ....
