Please join us in welcoming our new assistant park manager, Joseph “Joe” Berger, to the Collier-Seminole State Park team.
Joe has accepted the important role and is ready to provide experienced leadership to park field staff and volunteers.
As a young child growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, Joe loved playing outdoors and exploring nearby parks with friends and family. He spent a few years living in Tennessee where he graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in English. By 2018 he was ready to move to Florida to be near his parents, who relocated in 2014. While in search of his dream career, Joe soon found the perfect opportunity to work for the Florida Park Service. This would give him the chance to create exciting and educational outdoor experiences he so enjoyed from his childhood. The Florida Park Service fit the bill. ....

Where to See the Florida Panther

Every year on the third Friday of May, we observe Endangered Species Day.
At Florida’s state parks, we protect wildlife habitat by managing these critical lands and waters every day. We take special care of the habitats of endangered species.
Visitors sometimes ask where they are most likely to see the elusive Florida panther. Florida panthers are reclusive and normally live in remote, undeveloped areas. That means they are rarely seen by people.
Panthers and bobcats
The Florida panther (
Puma concolor coryi) is one of two native cat species in Florida, the other being the bobcat (
Lynx rufus). Adult panthers are brown, about 5 to 7 feet long and can weigh between 60 and 160 pounds. From a distance, visitors cannot mistake the panther for another animal if they can see its tail. A panther’s tail is as long as its body. Bobcats are much smaller than the Florida panther and their tails are about one-third their body length. ....

Regular Ramblings readers will know that I tend to go on a bit about invasive species. One or two have even got in touch to say I shouldn’t get too upset by these exotic visitors.
One asked: “Why worry about flocks of rose-ringed parakeets [Psittacula krameri]? Surely they make London parks much more attractive places.”
Another suggested: “Did the small exotic water deer from China not make a visit to the Norfolk Broads far more interesting?” To an extent, I could see their arguments. After all, one of our most common and most iconic countryside animals, the rabbit, was itself an invasive non-native species. ....

For creating an oasis of peace and tranquility, full moon yoga is hard to beat.
These days, we could all use some calm centeredness and Friday morning about 70 Islanders found theirs. As the moon dropped into the Gulf of Mexico to the west of South Beach, women and a few men carrying mats walked up the beach access in the predawn cool.
Once a month when there is a full moon, Marco Island Yoga holds a 6:30 a.m. yoga session, in addition to their regular daytime beach yoga classes held every morning or evening. On Friday, the class began at 6:30, the moon set at 6:37, and the sun rose at 6:52. ....
