BARRIE, ONT. Forestry experts oversaw a controlled burn across 100 acres of the Tosorontio Tract in Adjala-Tosorontio Saturday. It s the second such burn in the area over the last two years. The aim was to clear out young saplings that could take over and to make way for other vegetation, including oak trees. What this is doing is re-introducing a natural disturbance that s really very important to keep these types of forests diverse and healthy for the long term, says Graeme Davis, a forester with the County of Simcoe. Experts were expected to watch over the fire into the evening until it is out. ....
BARRIE, ONT. Barrie s waterfront was busy on the first Saturday under the new provincial stay-at-home order. Many people headed out for walks along Centennial Beach or through downtown, taking advantage of the summer-like weather. Most business owners are adhering to instructions to close, but several have also defied those orders and are open. In Midland, Heads Up Hair Design has been open all week, even after its owner received two $750 fines last month. Keely Turner calls staying open a very difficult decision. I had to do a lot of soul-searching to make it, but, at the end of the day, I have to feed my family. I m not going to look at my kids in the eye and explain why I can t feed them. ....
BARRIE, ONT. After being declared a COVID-19 hot-zone , the town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is looking for an increased supply of vaccines. Councillors in Bradford are calling on Simcoe-Muskoka s medical officer of health to push the province to provide more doses. The fact that our distribution of vaccines is apparently less than our per capita allotment would be troubling enough, but the reality that we are the only hot zone in your district should be reflected in surging vaccines to address this issue, councillors wrote in a letter to Dr. Charles Gardner Bradford has the highest incidence rate in Simcoe County, with 221 cases per 100,000 residents, nearly triple Barrie s rate. ....
BARRIE, ONT. The organizer of a recurring protest against COVID-19 restrictions in downtown Barrie has been hit with an $800 fine. Barrie Police issued a provincial offence notice to the man who spearheaded demonstrations at Meridian Place every Saturday since early March. Police estimate the latest rally drew 300 people. On Friday, police said while they respect the right of demonstrators to gather, they wanted people to abide by the provincial stay-at-home order and public health guidelines.
