Brittany Howard, John Prine Among Array of Nashville Grammy Honorees The Highwomen, Billy Strings, Fisk Jubilee Singers, Miranda Lambert and more took home trophies Tweet Brittany Howard and John PrinePhotos: Danny Clinch Awards shows are generally overblown affairs, which is part of why we ask a seasoned cultural critic like Ashley Spurgeon to take a poke at the big ones when they come around. (Sadly, Spurgeon wasn’t available this weekend, so no Oh Balls™ recap this time.) But the messages they send get to a huge audience regardless. It’s good to see a focus on the work of women, Black people and other people of color among the slate of nominees and winners just a couple of years after The Recording Academy’s then-leader responded to criticism by telling women they needed to “step up” if they wanted to be recognized. ....
The Best Albums Of 2020 Dec. 29, 2020 8:49 a.m. Before we get to the best albums of 2020, I want to highlight the most unexpectedly delightful song of the year, “I Wonder What’s Inside Your Butthole.” Lisa Rieffel dropped her daughter Jolee s inspired, inquisitive song about the mysteries of the human digestive system in May 2020, at a time when many people had just started to process the fact that the pandemic was going to disrupt life for much more than a few months. Even before the coronavirus pandemic started spreading wide in the U.S. and forcing shutdowns, Nashville, Tennessee country music’s epicenter was fighting its own share of battles. A tornado whipped through The Music City the first week of March, causing severe damage to the East Nashville neighborhood, where many country artists live and work. Even when engulfed by damage and sickness, the country community rallied. Even when they lost some of the greatest among them, like John Prine, Kenny Rogers and Charley Pride, country musicians found the strength to stay engaged with fans (if only through livestreams), fight for much-needed change and share some truly stellar records in the process. ....
