Tony-Winning Charlotte Teacher Has Plan To Boost Diversity In Theater Arts


Corey Mitchell’s seen a lot in his 25 years of teaching.
He won the first-ever Tony Award for excellence in theater education. He’s helped countless young students in the Charlotte area learn how to find their creative voices and express themselves on stage. He’s watched many of them nail auditions, grab spots in college programs and launch successful careers some even landing on Broadway.
But there’s something else Mitchell’s seen, too: Some students’ dreams being derailed by the complexities of navigating the system. He noticed it was the students with more resources say, the ability to hop on a flight any given weekend for an audition who generally have better luck. ....

Center for Public Integrity welcomes new staff – Center for Public Integrity


Introduction
The Center for Public Integrity has promoted veteran staff member Jamie Smith Hopkins to editor and is making key additions to the nonprofit investigative news organization’s reporting and audience teams.
Corey Mitchell, an associate editor and reporter at Education Week, will join Public Integrity on Feb. 22 as a senior reporter covering education.
Lisa Yanick Litwiller, director of audience for the community division of Hearst newspapers, will join the organization on March 1 as director of audience.
Ashley Clarke, a production assistant and weekend assignment editor at NBC 4 in Washington, D.C., will start March 22 as audience engagement editor.
Hopkins has served as a deputy editor, environment editor and reporter at Public Integrity, and last year co-managed the climate change series, “Hidden Epidemics,” a collaboration with Columbia Journalism Investigations and a coalition of local news organizations across the country. Playoff hopes have begun to slip away from Hawke s Bay United after a frustrating 2-1 loss to Canterbury United yesterday afternoon.
After picking up 10 points from their previous five matches, United were beaten by
the Dragons at English Park in Christchurch.
After a scrappy opening to the game, Canterbury soon found their rhythm, scoring the opening goal in the eighth minute. ....
