Blue Zones Project: Trying to expand to Erie, again

This time, former Gov. Tom Ridge will help make the sales pitch.
Ridge and Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper will give the opening remarks Tuesday at a two-hour meeting designed to spur community and business leaders into helping fund Blue Zones across the county.
The meeting will start at 10 a.m. at Mercyhurst University s Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, 501 E. 38th St.
We want people to see the success we have had in Corry and hope they would want to help us expand Blue Zones throughout Erie County, said Dahlkemper, an early proponent of Blue Zones.
Ridge is speaking at the meeting because the Ridge Policy Group, of which he is a founding member, has been contracted by Sharecare Blue Zones parent organization to help Blue Zones expand in Pennsylvania, Dahlkemper said. ....

10 years later: UPMC Hamot's affiliation with the Pittsburgh health system

It s easy now, 10 years later, to downplay the concern some of Erie s political and community leaders had about Hamot Medical Center joining UPMC.
Barry Grossman, then Erie County Executive, said his greatest fear was that Hamot would downsize and possibly close as patients were shipped to Pittsburgh for treatment.
Grossman, who died in May 2020, lived to see those fears proved false. Instead of downsizing or closing, Hamot has expanded its share of northwestern Pennsylvania s health-care market over the past decade.
UPMC President David Gibbons said Hamot s share of the county s patient revenue has risen from 41% in 2010 to 54.6% in 2020.
Our daily census when we joined UPMC was 235 patients, Gibbons said. In 2020 – if you remove the months of March, April and May because of the COVID-19 pandemic – we averaged 334 patients. That is significant. ....

LECOM tests COVID mass vaccination site at Bayfront Convention Center

Cindy Rodgers expected to receive her first dose of COVID-19 vaccine Thursday morning at the LECOM Center for Health and Aging.
Instead, the 71-year-old retired North East School District teacher was among 375 people to be vaccinated at the Erie Bayfront Convention Center.
I went to the LECOM Center and there was a sign on the door saying to go to the Convention Center, Rodgers said moments after getting her vaccine. So I hot-footed it down here.

LECOM offers expanded COVID-19 vaccination clinic, mobile vaccination lab

Janae Andrews didn t know when she might get the COVID-19 vaccine, since she is a healthy 30-year-old woman.
Andrews, who recovered from COVID-19 about a month ago, received her first dose Friday morning during an expanded community vaccination clinic at the LECOM Center for Health and Aging, 3910 Schaper Ave.
It is believed to be Erie County s first clinic that was open to anyone in Phase 1A of the state s COVID-19 vaccination plan.
I am so excited, because my grandma is 70, said Andrews, who qualified in Phase 1A because the Beaver County woman works at the Erie-based Pitts Funeral Home. We live together and she s my best friend. ....
