Alaska Journal | FISH FACTOR: Grundens launches outerwear collection made from old gear

Cordova contributes recyclable plastics to clothing company

Grundens is using recycled plastics from old fishing gear for a new line of rugged casual wear, and the first batch contains contributions from Cordova. Grundens, whose motto is “We are fishing,” is the go-to brand for outer wear and foul-weather gear for mariners around the world. The company, which originated in Sweden in 1911, debuted its NetSource Collection this spring. The men’s shorts and women’s leggings use Econyl, a regenerated nylon fabric that uses recycled fishing nets as the raw material. The company is connected with the Copper River Watershed Project, which collects the fishing nets and prepares them for shipping to Europe, where they are recycled into plastic pellets or, in this case, fibers.

Recent PhD Graduate Credits Georgia Highlands College This Commencement Season For Strong Foundation

Subscribe On April 29, Cory Lowe walked across the stage to celebrate earning his PhD in Criminology at the University of Florida, a little more than a decade after earning his Associate of Arts in Political Science at Georgia Highlands College (GHC). Although Lowe initially received his PhD in 2020, commencement ceremonies were put on hold at the time. Participating in last month s graduation ceremony reminded Lowe of earning his first degree at GHC, which laid the groundwork for his academic and professional career. Subscribe I dropped out of the first college I attended because of family and personal challenges, but when I had the opportunity to return to higher education, Georgia Highlands College provided an excellent educational experience and mentoring, Lowe said. This enabled me to restart my journey through higher education on a much better footing.

Backlog stalls APD use-of-force investigations

Copyright © 2021 Albuquerque Journal The Albuquerque Police Department has a new backlog problem and it means that even if officers are eventually found to have used excessive force they might not be disciplined for it. That’s because the internal investigators – in a unit that the department says is understaffed and overworked – are routinely blowing past deadlines. The latest report by the independent monitor overseeing the reform effort found that as of February, about 60% – 381 – of force investigations that were opened over the past year had not been completed yet. Of those cases more than half had already surpassed the 120-day deadline and an additional 59 cases were more than 90 days old.
