Patna, June 1 : Villagers of Gopalganj district in north Bihar are leaving their villages after increasing water level of the Gandak river has kindled fears of floods.
Most of the affected villages fall under Gopalganj s Sadar block. The villagers claim that water from the Gandak river enters into the villages falling in low-lying areas in Diyara region.
Villages such as Jagri Tola, and Maqsudpur, etc are situated on the bank of Gandak river. The water level is rising in Gandak river due to continuous rain taking place in the region due to the effects of super cyclones Yaas and Tauktae. Generally, we used to leave the village during the monsoon session. However, due to the super cyclones, moderate to severe rain is continuously taking place in the region leading to rising water level in the river, said Radhe Shyam Mahto of Jagri Tola.
Shamim s wife Meem Akter, 24, was admitted to Kumudini Hospital with injuries.
Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Gorai Highway Police Station, said the couple was returning to work in Brahmanbaria after celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr in Akkelpur village of Joypurhat.
The bodies were later handed to the victims families. Police seized both the vehicles and filed a case in this regard, the OC told The Daily Star.
In Gazipur, two bikers were killed when a pick-up van hit their motorcycle from behind on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Kaliakair area around 11:30am.
One of the deceased is Shafiqul Islam Khan, 32, a resident of Nagar Chhaoalee village in Tangail s Mirzapur upazila. The identity of the other victim could not be confirmed till last evening.

Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled passes away
Noted banker Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled passed away at a hospital in the capital on Wednesday morning. He was 80.
He breathed his last at around 5:40am at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
Sayed Ahmmed, son of Ibrahim Khaled, confirmed the news.
Earlier on Monday, the former Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, was put on life support at the hospital.
He had earlier tested positive for coronavirus, family sources said.
He was admitted to Bangladesh Specialized Hospital on February 1. He recovered from coronavirus, but around 80 per cent of his lung was affected.
Besides, the veteran economic expert had been suffering from various old age complications.
