.- More than a century ago, a bluish butterfly flitted among the sand dunes of the Sunset District in San Francisco and laid its eggs on a plant known as deerweed. As the city’s development overtook the dunes and deerweed, the butterflies vanished, too. The last Xerces blue butterfly was collected in 1941 from Lobos Creek by an entomologist who would later lament that he had killed what was one of the last living members of the species. But was this butterfly truly a unique species? Scientists could all agree that the grim fate of the Xerces blue — the first butterfly known to go extinct in North America because of human activities — was a loss for biodiversity. But they were divided over whether Xerces was its own distinct species, a subspecies of the widespread silvery blue butterfly Glaucopsyche lygdamus, or even just an isolated population of silvery blues. This may seem a scientific ....

NEW YORK, NY
.-Miles McEnery Gallery is presenting an exhibition of recent works by Tom LaDuke, on view 24 June through 31 July 2021 at 525 West 22nd Street. The exhibition marks the culmination of work created over the last few years, including nine paintings and one sculpture, and is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication featuring an essay by Daniel Spaulding.
Tom LaDuke’s paintings are painstakingly constructed, offering multiple layers to absorb, with their own references and meanings. In his essay on the artist, Spaulding asserts, “hard-to-describe forms occupy a spatial netherworld that is neither entirely here nor there: neither entirely on the flat of the canvas, nor entirely in the spatial grid of post-Renaissance pers ....

Los Angeles-based, Dallas-born artist Kate Barbee creates expressive, wildly colorful large-scale paintings filled with tumbling human figures amid domestic settings. To make her works, Barbee often starts out drawing onto the canvas on her studio floor. The works end with Barbee sometimes sewing patches of fabric or discarded canvases onto the new works.
Barbee’s latest works, “Feral Floral,” are currently on view with Kohn Gallery and were made entirely during the pandemic. Here, the tangles of her figures’ forms are interspersed with houseplants, ceramics, and the various nicknacks of a home. At times, the works capture the energy of the German Expressionist, other times the dreaminess of Marc Chagall’s atmospheric scenes, but are filled with a very contemporary sense of longing.  ....
