If you’ve walked into the local library over the past several months, you might have seen a new, but familiar face masked, of course sitting behind the protective plastic screen that enshrouds the reference desk. That face belongs to Tracy Phillips, who began her position as head librarian at the local branch of the Greene County Public Library in October of 2020. She took the reins from Connie Collett, who retired from the position after 31 years of service. A Yellow Springs native, Phillips began her tenure at the helm of the village library after having worked as the branch manager of a Dayton Metro Library for 11 years. She said that coming back to the YS library the library of her childhood was a logical next step in her career. ....
Yellow Springs kicked off the beginning of 2020, as always, with the traditional ball drop overseen by Lance Rudegeair; MTFR personnel handed out hot cocoa, and at least one marriage proposal greeted the new year. The Reach Out Free Clinic, which was held each Tuesday evening at Central Chapel AME Church, celebrated a year of operation in early January. The free, donation-based clinic, a satellite location of Reach Out Dayton, closed due to the pandemic in March; the Dayton location shuttered permanently later in the year. Nan Harshaw, longtime chair of the MLK Day Planning Committee, was awarded the annual Peacemaker Award at the 2020 Martin Luther King Day celebration. The late Willa Dallas was also recognized for her civil rights efforts and her role in initiating the annual local event. ....
Among all the mail ferried by the U.S. Postal Service every year, there’s one name and address that arguably receives more correspondence than any other in the country: Santa Claus, North Pole. Considering Santa’s busy schedule, however, it’s no surprise that the famed Christmas patron needs some help answering fan mail. For the past three decades, local Santa-designated aides have been providing that assistance, making sure that Santa not only receives the letters, but dutifully taking dictation after a fashion to make sure every letter writer receives a response. For years, the letters have been filed away presumably for naughty-or-nice record-keeping. Now the letters have found a new home at the YS Library, where past letter writers or their grown-ups are invited to take home their holiday missives. ....
