London traders see post-Brexit market fragmentation

City of London bankers are losing hope in normal rights to trade in euro-registered shares in the wake of Brexit. This is the beginning of market fragmentation, Conor Lawlor, director for Brexit at UK Finance, a bankers group, told a British parliament hearing Tuesday, after €6bn of trades shifted from London to Amsterdam and Paris in one day last Monday. The EU had no incentive to open up, he added.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has said a deal with the European Union on financial equivalence that left the U.K. as a financial regulatory rule-taker would not be worth having.
Bailey told parliamentarians that if the EU demanded that the U.K. follow its regulatory rules entirely in return for an agreement on equivalence, whereby it judges the U.K. financial rules equivalent to its own and so allows British banks access to the single market, that would be unacceptable.
If the price is too high then we can t just go for it whatever. I strongly recommend that we don t become a rule-taker. If the price of that is no equivalence, then I m afraid that will follow, said Bailey in an appearance before the Treasury Select Committee. ....

LONDON (Reuters) - The European Union is unlikely to grant broad access for the City of London, and the flight of euro share trading from Britain to the bloc is permanent, UK bankers said on Monday.

Britain left the EU’s single market and customs union on Dec. 31 and a trade deal agreed by both sides does not cover financial market access, which is being handled separately.
Last Monday more than six billion euros ($7.3 billion) in daily euro share trading in London shifted overnight to platforms in the EU, in the first sign of Brexit’s impact on the City. ....
