Master Gardener: Old Fort Hays Heirloom Garden Master Gardeners of Ellis County In the Surgeon’s Report of August 1875 at Fort Hays there came this detail, “The potatoes in the hospital garden, now in the process of digging and storing in cellar, have done exceedingly well notwithstanding the extreme want of moisture during the months of April, May, and June. The tomatoes, beets, onions, sweet corn, squash, and melons have not yielded quite as well.” While gardens were first ordered by the United States War Department, the importance of gardens at military forts was the fact they kept the soldiers healthy. Just two months after Fort Hays was established in 1867 there was mention of a garden at the post. Vegetables from the gardens were an important part of the soldiers nutrition and helped prevent dysentery and scurvy. The size of gardens ranged from less than an acre to 20 acres for more. The Progress-Index PETERSBURG – Conversations about Petersburg’s water infrastructure are usually sprinkled with comments about pipes dating back to the civil war, and a fear that the city could become “the next Flint, Michigan.” Questions about this aging infrastructure are coming back to the forefront now that Petersburg is responsible for upgrading the water and sewer infrastructure that feeds into the city’s incoming pharma manufacturing cluster. Upgrades to the utilities in this region could ultimately benefit a fair number of neighborhoods and businesses. A study from 2006 said that the Poor Creek Sewer Service Area was at or near capacity across the entire system. That 7.1 square mile portion of piping in the city’s southeastern corner accounts for about one-third of Petersburg’s wastewater utility. ....
Hays High senior Andrew Duke likes to dream big. From producing a musical during the COVID-19 pandemic and earning his Eagle Scout, to being accepted into two of the most prestigious universities in the country and now being named to the Kansas All-State Academic Team, Duke shoots for the stars. “I feel like I have kind of taken lead from a lot of different people,” Duke said humbly when asked about his achievements. Red Bull 3X House Unveiled for USA Men’s 3x3 National Team Training Camp Date: May 1, 2021 In preparation for its final chance to qualify the United States men for the 3x3 competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, USA Basketball and Red Bull have partnered to create a unique training opportunity for the 2021 USA Basketball Men’s 3x3 National Team. A residence in Beverly Hills, California, has been secured and converted into a Red Bull 3X House, a living and training space for the USA Men’s 3x3 National Team between May 1-18. The same half-court playing surface that will be used this summer for 3x3’s debut will be installed for the team’s training on the residence’s existing outdoor tennis/basketball courts. ....
