City events mark National Bike Month DEVAN FILCHAK | The Journal Gazette The city of Fort Wayne recognized National Bike Month on Tuesday by highlighting the growing community of cyclists in the area. Local leadership has shown a commitment to making Fort Wayne more bicycle-friendly since City Council passed the 2010 Bike Fort Wayne Plan, a news release said. The three prongs of the plan are to build infrastructure for cycling as a safe mode of transportation; to educate citizens about the benefits of cycling; and to stimulate policy changes that support cycling. In Fort Wayne, there are now 22 miles of bike routes, bike lanes and sharrows, which are parts of roads designated for cyclists. The city has also installed 68 new bike racks and replaced 17 bike racks. The Fort Wayne Regional Trails System includes 124 miles of trails, with about 93 of those miles within the city.
