Covid infection rates among Durham students have rocketed

The Covid infection rate in Durham is currently the highest in the country CONCERNS have been raised after shocking figures revealed the rise in infection rates in part of the North-East was significantly higher than the rest of the county. The Covid case rates in Durham suggest one in 50 people in the city centre has tested positive in the last week. Civic leaders suggest it could be a result of the densely populated student areas, and there are fears the rapidly transmissible Delta variant is being passed into the wider community. Earlier this week the Northern Echo reported how ‘unprecedented’ levels of coronavirus was forcing schools to close and still making people ill.

Champagne Society Summer Ball cancelled for the second time

The Champagne Summer Ball run by Durham University Champagne Society has been cancelled for the second year running due to police concerns, the society has said. In a statement on its Facebook page, the Champagne Society stated: “Apparently absent of any real crime to tackle, the police have again decided to focus their efforts on us instead. As a result, the ball in its current form is simply no longer viable.” The society was investigated “on the basis of the potentially life-threatening combination of excessive alcohol and students entering the water at Hardwick Hall.” The Students’ Union stated that “the risk assessment put in place had not been delivered on the night.”

Anselmians RUFC s improvements completed after funding deal

A WIRRAL rugby club s ten-year project to improve its player and community facilities has been completed following a major funding deal. COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions delayed improvements to Eastham-based Anselmians RUFC s work on a high-end event space and community hub. West Kirby-based Bathgate Business Finance specialist secured the £100,000  funding needed to complete the project.  The club is preparing to open its clubhouse Eastham Pavilion to guests and the local community from next Monday, when planned easing of COVID-19 restrictions will permit tables of six to dine indoors.
