A Timaru man who was found guilty of assault after he cut off his son’s dreadlocks without consent has been discharged without conviction.
The man, aged 42, appeared before Judge Jim Large for sentencing at Timaru District Court on Wednesday.
He was found guilty of assault following a judge alone trial in March, after he cut the boy’s hair off in an incident in August 2020.
Lawyer Codi Lilley said since the trial, her client had made significant steps to improve his behaviour. ....

A Duntroon dairy worker who aimed a gun at a man and his child in a road rage incident has been jailed for 19 months.
Jeremiah William Witana-Gates, 29, appeared for sentencing at Oamaru District Court on two charges of unlawful possession of a pistol, possession of an offensive weapon, possession of cannabis, and driving while forbidden. All charges stemmed from an incident on November 30, 2019.
In summing up, Judge Tom Gilbert said Witana-Gates had been driving in Port Chalmers when a vehicle in front of him took a wide berth and pulled into a parking space. ....
