Meet Corvallis’ New NAACP President Jason J. Dorsette February 6, 2021 Jason J. Dorsette takes the lead at the NAACP Corvallis/Albany branch as racial equality and equity are once again in the national spotlight, dominating this past year’s discussions after the widely publicized deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of law enforcement. Dorsette originally hails from High Point, North Carolina, which is notably the furniture capital of America, if not the world. He relocated to Corvallis in 2014 for a job at Oregon State University, where he currently works in the Educational Opportunities Program, which academically supports traditionally underserved groups such as students of color and those with marginalized identities. He’s also pursuing a PhD from the educational policy and equity program, looking at the ways racial identity impacts the perception of the environment. ....
One Form Protects a Renter from Eviction Until July December 28, 2020 Oregon tenants are protected from eviction over not paying rent until June 30, 2021, if they sign a sworn statement of financial hardship for their landlords. House Bill 4401, which was passed by the Oregon Legislature on Dec. 21, extends an eviction moratorium until the end of June next year, and puts $150 million in a landlord relief fund. Another $50 million goes to rental assistance. The Oregon Law Center has released an online guide showing renter rights under the new moratorium extension. Starting Jan. 1, renters who owe landlords and who still can’t pay on time because of the pandemic, must fill out a sworn declaration to prove their hardship status rather than notifying landlords of the problem. Reasons for nonpayment can include loss of income, medical expenses, increased child care costs, or any other financial barriers. ....
Corvallis, Eugene Men Accused of Hate Crime, Lying to FBI December 24, 2020 Credit: KOIN Two Oregon men were among four who were indicted for federal hate crimes stemming from allegations of a racially-motivated attack on a Black man at a Lynwood, Washington bar in 2018, according to court documents. This past week, FBI agents arrested Daniel Delbert Dorson, 24, of Corvallis and Randy Smith, 38, of Eugene. Prosecutors said Smith was already in custody on unrelated charges. Jason Desimas, 44, of Tacoma, Washington and Jason Stanley, 43, of Boise, Idaho were also charged. The four men face criminal accusations of lying to the FBI about the incident. ....

COVID-19 Takes Another Local Life December 14, 2020 There were 1,048 new coronavirus cases and six more deaths reported by the Oregon Health Authority on Sunday, Dec. 13. It was the smallest daily count in two weeks and lowest number of deaths in a week. COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are stabilizing, but remain near record highs. Deaths, however, are increasing at a record rate, with November emerging as the deadliest month so far for the pandemic in Oregon. December isn’t looking much better, though the first batch of vaccines is expected Monday. “We will work as quickly as possible to deliver vaccines to the public, starting with frontline health care workers and those who have been hardest hit by COVID-19,” Gov. Kate Brown said in a statement. “Please keep doing your part to keep your family and loved ones safe wear a mask, stay home when you are sick, and avoid gatherings. Together, we can do this. Hope is on the way.” ....
