Size measurements of two neutron stars are narrowing down what kinds of exotic matter might exist in their extremely dense cores.
Neutron stars are the tricksters of the celestial sphere. Their age, their temperature, even their size is not always what it first appears to be.
But with the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) aboard the International Space Station, astronomers are finally beginning to make some headway measuring these stars’ actual size and with that, some insight into their strange interiors.
Members of the NICER team presented two independent size measurements of the most massive neutron star known at the recent virtual meeting of the American Physical Society. These studies, now undergoing scientific review, suggest that nuclear physicists might need to rethink what happens in the stars’ ultra-dense cores. ....

Eleven billion miles away – more than four times the distance from us to Pluto – lies the boundary of our solar system’s magnetic bubble, the heliopause. Here the Sun’s magnetic field, stretching through space like an invisible cobweb, fizzles to nothing. Interstellar space begins.
“It s really the largest boundary of its kind we can study,” said Walt Harris, space physicist at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
We still know little about what lies beyond this boundary. Fortunately, bits of interstellar space can come to us, passing right through this border and making their way into the solar system. ....

Our knowledge of the universe is always expanding, much like the universe itself. This means that we occasionally discover something new, or come up with a new model to explain data we didn t quite understand before. One such astronomical phenomena is the magnetar, a powerful type of neutron star that was first proposed in 1979. That year, astronomers suggested that certain blasts of gamma and X-ray radiation and radio pulses might be explained by stars with exceptionally powerful magnetic fields. ....
