Editor s note: This story has been updated with more details provided by police. Human bones were discovered on a small outcropping in the Susquehanna River on Monday morning, according to Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni. The skeletal remains appeared to have been washed up on a small, unnamed island in the river north of Ely Island, about a mile and a half south of Koser Park in Conoy Township, Diamantoni said. A boater had found the remains on Sunday, July 25, according to Susquehanna Township Regional Police said. Three large bones, jeans, a brown leather belt, a fishing lure, Bic lighter and a small silver pocket knife were found with the remains, according to police. ....

Eric Bieber, chief deputy of the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office, previously confirmed the body was identified as Benjamin M. Shambaugh of Mechanicsburg. The 36-year-old had died by freshwater drowning, but the manner of death was not released at the time.
