Hawaii Magazine Spoiler alert: It’s not native to the Islands. Apr 27, 2021 With the plumeria tree. “I was amazed at all the varieties,” says Brunner, who now owns Maui Plumeria Gardens in Haʻikū on Maui with more than 400 trees. “There was the common Celadine, but there were also reds and pinks and different shapes of petals. They had a nice, fresh, floral scent. It always represented to me what Hawaiʻi was.” A lot of people feel exactly the same way. Plumeria is still one of the most popular lei in Hawaiʻi. I’ve been going to Koko Crater Botanical Garden a lot more often than I used to, to get some fresh air, stretch my legs and take a break from, you know, everything. I’ve only been here a minute, but I can already understand the sentiment on a spiritual level. Ever since my girlfriend, Kaila, and I crossed the the Ko‘olau Mountains on the Pali Highway and came out on the other side, I could feel the dull thrum of my daily stresses soften. By the time we passed the quiet neighborhood bordering the garden, filled with one-story homes and little yards with mango and plumeria trees, I felt like I could relax a little. And then we entered the garden, and I found room to breathe. Four hundred acres, to be exact. ....
