Sustainability rankings don't always identify sustainable companies

British American Tobacco (famous for cigarettes), Coca-Cola (world-renowned for its sugary soft drinks) and Glencore (a British/Swiss mining company) were recently ranked in the top five most environmentally and socially responsible companies on the FTSE 100, the share index of the 100 biggest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.
As consumers and investors, we often look at environmental, social and governance (ESG) rankings to guide our purchase, investment and employment decisions. But what should we make of this list, compiled by British investment services firm Hargreaves Lansdown?
As kids, we learned that smoking kills, yet British American Tobacco has a place at the top of the list, suggesting it’s a highly responsible company. ....

Sunburn — The morning read of what's hot in Florida politics — 3.12.21

Sunburn — The morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics — 3.12.21
Good Friday morning.
According to a new poll released by
Ryan Tyson of The Tyson Group, Florida voters support several measures pitched as improving election security and voter access.
The poll, commissioned by nonpartisan nonprofit Secure Democracy, found more than three-quarters of Floridians want ballot drop boxes to be monitored either in-person or by video.
The proposal earned 77% among the 600 voters polled, with Republicans backing it at a higher rate (83%) than Democrats or no-party voters.
Meanwhile, nearly seven in 10 said they want their family members or caregivers to be able to turn in a ballot on their behalf. A near equal number (67%) want more days of early voting, while most (57%) want the state to tell felons what fines they need to pay to regain voting rights. ....

The entrepreneurial spirit is a cornerstone of American culture, but history books too often leave out the extensive contributions of minorities and women. In honor of Black History Month, Stacker is shining a light on 50 Black entrepreneurs who made a lasting influence on the business world and, often in the process, civil rights from the Revolutionary War to today.
The abrupt end to slavery in 1865 following the conclusion of the Civil War freed about 4 million people but left them without a clear trajectory forward. Black Codes afforded freed people the right to sue in court and marry but stipulated other discriminatory rules like keeping them from serving on juries or in state militias. ....

Coca-Cola moving from Lakeland to Winter Haven and adding 172 jobs

Coca-Cola moving from Lakeland to Winter Haven and adding 172 jobs
WINTER HAVEN  Coca-Cola Beverages Florida is expanding its local presence and jumping from Lakeland to Winter Haven, adding 170 Polk County jobs.
Coca-Cola has a distribution center in Lakeland at 1770 Interstate Drive, off Kathleen Road just south of I-4. That center employs 182 people, said Bruce Lyon, president of the Winter Haven Economic Development Council. And according to the Coca-Cola website, the center distributes 5.3 million cases of Coca-Cola annually.
But that space doesn t suit the company anymore.
Our current location doesn t allow us the space that we need for our operations there, so we are looking for a larger location, Katrinda McQueen, director of communications for Coca-Cola Beverages Florida LLC, said. We have been in Polk County for quite some time, so we were simply looking for opportunities in Polk County to expand our footprint.   ....
