White House warns industry on ransomware threat -- Defense Systems

By Justin Katz
Jun 09, 2021
The White House on Thursday sent out a memo to industry leaders warning them to take steps to protect themselves against ransomware in light of several high-profile attacks on U.S. companies this year as well as a general uptick documented throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
The memo, from Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technology, also states the administration is actively developing policies related making ransom payments, an issue that was re-ignited after Colonial Pipeline s CEO publicly said his company paid a ransom after their own systems were compromised in May. ....

European Commission joins Czech case against Poland's Turow coal mine

3 minute read
The European Commission said on Wednesday it would take part in the Czech Republic s lawsuit against Poland at Europe s highest court over the expansion of the Polish Turow open-pit brown coal mine near the two countries border.
I can now confirm that the Commission has today submitted its request to intervene before the Court of Justice of the EU in Case C-121/21 Czechia v Poland, a spokesperson said.
The Commission said in December that Poland had committed some infringements of European Union law that the Czech Republic had claimed in the case. Those included incorrectly applying EU laws requiring it to consult the public and neighbouring countries over extending the life of the mine. ....

The IG report published last week identified vulnerabilities which it said left the department vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks after DHS failed to clearly define patch management responsibilities and implement required configuration settings.
DHS spent $180 million between 2013 and 2020 to design and build a CDM program, yet the report found the department had not yet strengthened its cybersecurity posture by implementing a department-wide continuous monitoring solution. The audit was conducted between August 2019 and August 2020. ....

JEDI remains key to Pentagon's JADC2 dreams -- Defense Systems

By Lauren C. Williams
Jun 09, 2021
The Defense Department has an official strategy for implementing Joint All Domain Command and Control, but it still needs an enterprise cloud capability to make it real.
We are clearly in need of cloud to include a deployable, tactical cloud to do this type of processing and data storage on the edge, Lt. Gen. Dennis Crall, the Joint Staff s J6, director of command and control, communications, and computers, told reporters June 4 after announcing the signing of a DOD-wide JADC2 strategy.
We have some key dependencies to make these things happen: cloud, network improvements, identity management would be another one, Crall said. ....
