'The ELEVEN' art project nears goal line with Pete Rozelle unveiling


CANTON – Standing on Fifth Street NW in downtown Canton, artist Tommy Morgan described the inspiration for the football-themed banner mural towering over him from the side of a brick building.
A tribute to late NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, Morgan said during Tuesday s formal unveiling that he set out to capture the joy of the man who is credited with helping to make professional football the most popular sport in America today.
Turning around, the Stark County artist gestured at Rozelle and said football teams on each side of the sprawling art piece represent the NFL and AFL before a merger the commissioner negotiated in 1966. ....

New, existing businesses take advantage of entertainment district


CANTON  The Carpe Diem Coffee Shop intends to offer something a little stronger than coffee in the near future.
Owners Patrick and Cathy Wyatt are in the process of obtaining a liquor permit, allowing them to craft a signature drink like the Irish coffee served by Dead Rabbit, a bar in New York City. They re one of four businesses that have applied for the 15 liquor permits created with the city s downtown entertainment district last February. 
We don t want to become a full-fledged bar, with people coming in there and handing out all day, but we definitely want to enhance our coffee and anything that has a coffee theme with it, Patrick Wyatt said. ....

Illumination: Canton Light Festival makes downtown debut on Friday


A vibrant and multifaceted antidote to cabin fever is launching Friday in downtown Canton in the form of Illumination: Canton Light Festival, a free, family-friendly and mostly outdoors event.
Open from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Feb. 27, Illumination will offer visitors self-guided attractions at eight locations:
 A projection-mapping experience with music on the outdoor plaza of the Cultural Center for the Arts, along with an additional light and sound environment inside the center in Cable Recital Hall, plus seven artist-created light sculptures and interactive family activities in the center s Great Court.
A light and sound show presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame every 15 minutes at Centennial Plaza, the $12.3-million outdoor entertainment site that just opened to the public. ....
